Kayu Gangsa

Formed in 2002, Kayu Gangsa has performed all over the UK in theatres, arts centres and festivals, such as the Festival of World Cultures in Dublin, the Manchester International Festival, the annual Malaysia Festival in Trafalgar Square for the last five years as well as performing at 2013 and 2015 World Gamelan Festivals in Terengganu, Malaysia.

Kayu Gangsa grew out of the only UK-based Southeast Asian performing arts company Nusantara, which has been in existence since 2000. Based in Nottingham, they undertake a wide variety of performing arts including music, dance, crafts and shadow puppets around the UK and Europe and educational workshops, classes and residencies throughout the year.

 

Kayu Gangsa are committed to performing contemporary work influenced by south east Asian culture, as well as classical and traditional repertoire. As well as performing at theatres, festivals and other cultural events they also promote Malaysian culture around Europe on behalf of the Malaysian Government and Tourism industry.

Meet our Musicians

Sophie Fishwick

Sophie has to date, a 30 year career in music as a performer, teacher and promoter. Her workshop facilitation includes drumming, percussion, body percussion, gamelan and rock n roll.

Patrick Cannon

Patrick played and wrote for Javanese Gamelan under the tuition of Dave Smith (Scratch Orchestra). Patrick has been a member of Kayu Gangsa since January 2014.

Crispin Harris

Cris has been playing drums, guitar, keyboards and Percussion for over forty years. Cris is currently involved in several different musical projects including Balkan, Greek Rebetica, 

and a world music band. 

Julian Butt

For the last 14 years. Julian have worked for a variety of Derbyshire Arts organisations and is the Creative Director of the music organisation Baby People.

Mark Shotter

Mark have been a percussionist for around 25 years now. Apart from Kayu Gangsa, Mark is currently playing in two samba bands, the Nottingham School of Samba and Nova Guarda.

Bertie Chadwick

Bertie is one of the newest members of Kayu Gangsa. A naturally talented musician, Gamelan is his first venture into the world of music
